Virtual crowds video case study for Dimension Studio
When it comes to large-scale crowd creation in film and television, traditional approaches – whether that's extras, digital doubles, or CGI – come with challenges in cost, logistics, and realism. Dimension Studio is a leader in volumetric capture, a solution that's transforming the way the industry looks at creating virtual crowds. Twelve Noon Films was asked to create a case study video showcasing this technology, filming on location at Dimension's offices in London.
Filming the Case Study
With just one day of production, our team set out to craft a clear and informative video targeted at VFX supervisors and studios looking to create realistic crowds at scale. The core of our story came from in-depth interviews with Dimension Studio’s co-founders, Simon Windsor and Callum MacMillan, who provided insight into their approach to volumetric capture and its applications in major productions.
We also incorporated a contribution from VFX Supervisor Paul Norris, who was filmed separately by Dimension’s in-house team.
The case study video highlights Dimension’s role in bringing virtual crowds to life in some of the industry’s most ambitious projects, including:
Those About To Die – Volumetric crowds filling grand stadiums in this historical series.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Lifelike concert audiences created for the Whitney Houston biopic.
Wicked – Digital crowds integrated into the world of Oz.
By leveraging volumetric capture, Dimension enables productions to create highly realistic, scalable, and diverse digital crowds, reducing the reliance on traditional extras while maintaining authenticity in movement and expression.
Production and Post-Production
We filmed on a Sony a7S III, ensuring high-quality footage with excellent low-light performance, while the edit was completed in DaVinci Resolve, bringing out the best in each interview and integrating footage provided by Dimension. We chose accompanying music from Music Vine to complement the tone and reinforce the innovation and impact of Dimension’s work.
With virtual crowds becoming an essential tool in large-scale productions, Dimension Studio is at the forefront of this approach. Through this case study video, Twelve Noon Films has helped bring their story directly to VFX supervisors and studios looking for new solutions in crowd simulation.
